21 Questions to Ask Before Plastic Surgery: The Questions Most People Forget

THE SURGERY INSIDER™

Considering plastic surgery? Start with the questions that go beyond before-and-after photos.

One of the most important parts of preparing for plastic surgery happens long before surgery day: knowing what questions to ask.

Most people already know to ask about the surgeon, the procedure and the expected result.

Those questions matter.

But what about the questions you don't know you should be asking?

What happens if something doesn't go according to plan?

Who is responsible for your care after you leave the operating room?

What happens if you're traveling for plastic surgery and you're not ready to fly home on your scheduled date?

What's actually included in your surgery quote?

And who do you call at 2:13 in the morning when you're recovering and something doesn't feel right?

Those questions matter too.

I created this 21-question plastic surgery checklist to help you have a more informed conversation with your surgical and recovery teams — whether you're considering plastic surgery in the United States, Colombia or somewhere else.

Save this guide. Screenshot it. Take it to your plastic surgery consultation.

Because beautiful before-and-after photos can show you what happened when things went right.

You should understand the plan for when they don't.

Questions About Your Plastic Surgery Plan

1. If something doesn't go according to plan, what happens next?

This may be one of the most important questions to ask before plastic surgery — and it's one people often don't think about until they need the answer.

Ask:

Who do I contact?

Where would I be evaluated?

Who coordinates my care?

What happens if I need additional medical attention?

What is considered an emergency?

If I'm traveling for plastic surgery, what happens if I'm not ready to fly home when originally planned?

You don't want to be figuring out the escalation plan for the first time while you're recovering.

THE SURGERY INSIDER TAKEAWAY

Don't only have a surgery plan. Understand the plan for when the original plan changes.

2. Who is responsible for my care after I leave the operating room?

Your plastic surgery experience doesn't end when the procedure ends.

Ask exactly who is responsible for different parts of your post-operative care and recovery.

Depending on your arrangement, that could involve your surgical team, nursing or caregiver support, recovery staff, a coordinator or other healthcare professionals.

Don't settle for:

“Don't worry, we'll take care of you.”

Ask:

“Who specifically will be taking care of me, and what is each person's role?”

Questions to Ask About Your Plastic Surgery Results

3. Can you show me patients who started with a body similar to mine?

Before-and-after photos are useful.

But don't look only at the after.

Study the before.

A person can go to the same surgeon, request a similar aesthetic and still have a very different result because they didn't start with the same anatomy.

Starting shape, proportions, skin characteristics, fat distribution, previous procedures and other individual factors can all affect the surgical plan and potential outcome.

Stop shopping for somebody else's AFTER. Start learning from their BEFORE.

4. What is realistic for my body — not the inspiration photo I brought?

Bring your inspiration photos.

They're useful for communicating what you like.

But then ask:

“What would a realistic version of this goal look like on my body?”

An inspiration photo isn't a blueprint or a guaranteed outcome.

The person in the photo has their own anatomy, proportions, medical history and starting point.

Use inspiration to start the conversation — not define the promised result.

5. What would make you tell me no?

This is one of my favorite plastic surgery consultation questions.

Instead of only asking what can be done, ask what circumstances would make the surgeon recommend something different, reduce the proposed plan, postpone surgery or decline to perform a particular procedure.

You aren't only trying to understand what someone is willing to do.

You want to understand what they're not willing to do — and why.

6. Am I trying to do too much in one surgery?

When you're already planning surgery, it can be tempting to think:

If I'm going through recovery anyway, why not do everything?

That's a conversation to have with the qualified medical professionals evaluating you.

Ask how the procedures you're considering affect your individual surgical plan, recovery and medical decision-making.

The question isn't simply:

“How much can we do?”

A better question is:

“What makes sense for me?”

Medical Questions to Ask Before Plastic Surgery

7. What medical testing do I need before plastic surgery?

Ask which pre-operative tests your medical team requires and when they need to be completed.

Depending on your individual situation and the procedure, this may include laboratory testing, an EKG or additional medical evaluation determined by your healthcare team.

If you're traveling for plastic surgery, timing becomes especially important.

At Curvy Gyals Aesthetics, clients are asked to complete required labs and EKG testing in their home city approximately 30 days before travel so the appropriate medical professionals can review the information before the trip and identify whether something requires further evaluation.

Final medical clearance remains with the qualified medical professionals responsible for the patient's care.

8. Who determines whether I'm medically cleared for plastic surgery?

Your coordinator isn't your medical clearance.

Your concierge isn't your medical clearance.

Social media definitely isn't your medical clearance.

Ask which qualified medical professional or surgical/anesthesia team makes the final medical decision and when that determination occurs.

Planning surgery and being medically cleared for surgery are not the same thing.

9. What medications, supplements and medical history do I need to disclose?

Give your medical team complete and accurate information.

That means discussing prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, supplements, previous procedures, relevant medical history, smoking or nicotine use and anything else they specifically ask you about.

Don't decide for yourself that something “probably doesn't matter.”

Tell them. Let the qualified medical professional determine what's relevant.

10. What happens if my pre-op tests show something unexpected?

Don't only ask which tests are required.

Ask what happens if something needs further evaluation.

Who reviews the results?

Could additional testing be required?

Could your surgical plan change?

Could surgery be postponed?

If you're traveling internationally for plastic surgery, understanding this process before boarding a flight becomes even more important.

Plastic Surgery Recovery Questions

11. Who do I contact after hours?

Or, as I like to ask it:

Who has me at 2:13 AM?

Surgery might happen at 10 AM.

Recovery doesn't operate on business hours.

Ask:

Who can I contact after hours?

Who is physically available?

Who handles routine recovery questions?

What symptoms require contacting the surgical team?

What symptoms require urgent or emergency medical attention?

Everybody researches the operating room. Research the hours after it too.

12. What help will I realistically need during the first 24, 48 and 72 hours after surgery?

Don't build your plastic surgery recovery plan around the most optimistic version of yourself.

Ask what everyday activities may require assistance.

That might include mobility, meals, transportation, personal care, appointments, following medication instructions or managing compression garments according to your post-operative instructions.

The goal isn't to make recovery sound frightening.

It's to plan before you're the one recovering.

13. Who is responsible for each part of my recovery?

“Aftercare included” sounds reassuring.

But what exactly does aftercare mean?

Ask who handles:

Nursing or caregiver support.

Transportation.

Appointments.

Meals.

Recovery coordination.

Medical questions.

Garments.

Communication with the surgical team.

These aren't necessarily the same job.

Don't only ask whether recovery care is included. Ask who is providing each part of it.

14. How long is plastic surgery recovery?

This is one of the most common questions people ask — but I would make it more specific.

Instead of simply asking:

“How long is recovery?”

Ask:

When might I be cleared to return to work?

When can I drive?

When can I travel?

When can I exercise?

When can I resume specific daily activities?

When might I stop needing assistance?

Recovery isn't one finish line, and timelines can vary by procedure and individual.

Ask your medical team when you can safely resume each part of your normal life.

15. When should I change from a Stage 1 to Stage 2 faja?

If compression garments are part of your post-operative plan, don't treat moving from one stage to another like a universal graduation date.

Two people can have surgery on the same day and still have different procedures, swelling, recovery progress and instructions.

Ask your post-operative team what they look for when determining whether your compression plan should change.

Your calendar doesn't heal. Your body does.

Always follow the individualized compression instructions given by the professionals responsible for your post-operative care.

16. What happens after I travel home?

If you're having plastic surgery away from home, this question belongs on your list.

Ask:

What follow-up happens after I leave?

Who checks in?

How are questions communicated?

What should be evaluated by a healthcare professional near me?

Who receives information from local evaluations if needed?

What symptoms mean I should seek urgent or emergency care?

Your recovery doesn't end when your return flight takes off.

Questions About Plastic Surgery Cost and What's Included

17. What exactly is included in my plastic surgery quote?

This is where comparing plastic surgery prices can become misleading.

Don't compare two numbers until you understand what each number actually represents.

Depending on the provider and arrangement, ask whether the quoted amount includes or excludes things such as:

  • The surgical procedure
  • Surgical facility and anesthesia
  • Pre-operative testing
  • Medications
  • Recovery care
  • Accommodation
  • Transportation
  • Meals
  • Compression garments
  • Recovery supplies
  • Follow-up care
  • Travel

One quote may represent primarily the procedure.

Another may represent a much larger portion of the entire experience.

Those aren't necessarily the same product at two different prices.

Don't just compare price. Compare responsibility.

18. What expenses could come up that aren't included in my original quote?

Sometimes the expense people remember least is everything surrounding the surgery.

Think about possibilities such as:

Changed flights.

Additional accommodation.

Extra time away from work.

Help after returning home.

Additional garments or supplies.

Additional medical evaluations if required.

Transportation changes.

Your circumstances may be different, but the principle is the same:

Budget for the journey — not just the procedure.

Questions to Ask When Traveling for Plastic Surgery

19. What happens if my surgery date, recovery or travel plan changes?

If you're considering plastic surgery abroad, your medical plan and travel plan are connected.

Ask in advance:

Who handles travel changes?

What happens if I need additional nights?

What happens if I'm not ready to travel on the original date?

Which costs are included?

Which additional expenses would be my responsibility?

What happens if the surgical plan changes?

These aren't glamorous questions.

They're important ones.

20. What happens if a planned procedure is changed or removed?

There may be circumstances where the qualified medical professionals responsible for your care recommend modifying the original surgical plan.

Before surgery, ask what a change could mean for:

Your procedure.

Recovery.

Accommodation.

Travel.

Payments or applicable credits.

Follow-up.

Expectations.

Don't wait until a plan changes to learn the policy for a changed plan.

The Most Important Plastic Surgery Question May Be the One You Ask Yourself

21. What am I willing — and not willing — to go through for the result I want?

This question isn't for your surgeon.

It's for you.

How much downtime can you realistically manage?

Who will support you?

Can you take the necessary time away from work?

Have you planned for recovery?

Do you understand the risks, alternatives and expected recovery discussed with your medical team?

Are your expectations realistic?

And here's the question I really want you to sit with:

If nobody else ever saw your result, would you still want to do this for yourself?

Because plastic surgery isn't just the after-photo.

It's the entire decision and journey that comes before it.

What Should I Ask at a Plastic Surgery Consultation?

If you don't remember all 21 questions, start with these five:

  1. What is realistic for my anatomy and goals?
  2. What would make you recommend changing or declining my requested plan?
  3. If something doesn't go according to plan, what happens next?
  4. Who is responsible for my care during recovery and after hours?
  5. What exactly is included in my quote, and what could cost extra?

Screenshot those five.

Then come back to the complete list before your consultation.
